SPECIAL ARCHIVES OF THE GIA

The archive of the General Archives of Mongolia, one of the oldest archives in Mongolia, was established by the order No. 41 of the Director of the Internal Protection Agency of Mongolia on February 10, 1932.

Since 1930s the Special archives organized systemization of documents for the Internal Protection Agency by centralizing and registering documents from headquarters, provinces in permanent conserving place. Activities such as sorting the archive documents, checking the register records have been performed until 1944 and since 1945 the procedure for archival work has been established. Furthermore, in 1950s a number of important activities in the field of archives resulted in matching outcomes along with establishment of variety of databases.

The commissioning of the archive facility in 1980 was important in improving the storage, protection of archival documents and improving the working conditions of the staff.

The archive is made up from the collection of documents since the establishment of the Internal Protection Agency, all documents created during Intelligence organizations activities, as well as documents issued until 1990 from organizations under the Ministry of Public Security such as Police, Border and Domestic military, Correctional agencies.

In 1959, a group of researchers was established to find and highlight merited officers who have devoted their lifework for their country and its independence.

The Museum of the Ministry of Public Security established in 1983, the Border Force Museum founded in 1998, the GIA Museum founded in 2002 have their resources originated from the Special archives.

Based on documents of the Special archives, our famous writers, poets, composers, filmmakers, artists and researchers have produced numerous novels, stories, research works, artistic and documentary films, television and radio programs. Nowadays, the archives reading room provides services concerning the use of its documents.

The archives receives requests for reference as well as other related issues from citizens who have worked in the Ministry of Public Security, Border and Domestic Military, and have performed special tasks in the Security Agency. They also carry out their duties and responsibilities connected with executing the law related to acquitting victims of false political persecution, providing them compensation by referring the investigation cases to relevant establishments, delivering archive references about the victims and order of acquittal.
